Florida Everglades Camping

Why so many airfields?
Just why are there so many abandoned airfields in the Florida everglades? In particular the 10,500′ “Dade Collier” jet runway?
My father-in-law in Homasassa reckons that they’ll use the runways to fly in dissidents when they round them up for re-education, he says that there are empty jails and concentration camps throughout Florida, New Mexico and Louisiana, just waiting for someone to declare martial law. But he’s a madman.
Isn’t he?

Multiple reasons, some of which he is not to far off, but still off. They all go back to WWII.
1) A lot of these airstrips were used as training airstrips in WWII. The pilots in training needed as many landings and take offs as possible when they were in the safe training environment. Many of the airstrips in the Florida panhandle are the approximate length of WWII aircraft carriers. That way Navy fliers could practice their short distance takeoffs.
2) There was a concern for defense of the US. When the Japaneses attacked Pearl Harbor they focused on the major airfields. The only airstrip which had aircraft available to respond were small auxiliary airstrips. Some of these airstrips were used as auxiliary fields to hold ready aircraft.
3) Some of the airstrips were used to support the transportation of axis POWs, many of which ended up in the south. If they fly the prisoners directly to their prison camps they could avoid security threats moving them by train.
