Wheres the best place to stay in the Miami/Southern Florida area?

I have booked flights to Miami in one month’s time with my girlfriend. Firstly we wanted to stay in Miami beach/South beach etc but have heard from others that it is not the nicest place to go to. Just wondering where else is nice to stay in the southern florida area, looking mostly for nice beaches, good shopping, nice restaurants etc.
